Icebreakers

How do you get the conversation started?  Sometimes when you are working with groups, you need a little kick start for a conversation.  I use some old fashioned icebreaker questions, but have given them a new look.  I found some clear glass pebbles at a local craft store on sale for $1.00 a bag, used my scrapbook paper, Mod Podge, and best fine-tipped Sharpie marker to create some question stones.

We have used the stones several ways.
  • One way is to just pass around the can and each student takes a stone, reads his or her question, and everyone takes a turn as we go around the table.

  • Another way is to have each student take a stone and put it on the table in front of them.  Have one student start by picking another student who has to answer their stone.  When students have answered they pull their stone away indicating they can't be picked again.  Keep going until everyone has answered.

  1. Carol, without sounding really ignorant, what is Mod Pog? I think I'd like to try a similar thing with the pebbles.

    1. A glue like substance found in craft stores. Its called Mod Podge. I spelled it wrong above. I'll have to go back and to the post to correct it.

You should try to make them. It takes a little while to dry, but they are very durable. The kids really like to hold them.

  4. Ok, so I can't find any store that has those stones. Does the store where you bought them have an online website where they can be ordered?

    1. AC Moore and Michaels both have them. Look by florals. Sometimes you can find them at the dollar store too.

    2. How do you get the paper in your stones?

    3. The paper is glued to the bottom of the stone with the Mod Podge.
