Checking In and Checking Out--Helping Students Stay On Track

I have a few small friends that I see everyday because they need help staying on track academically.  Left to their own devices, they would not get homework done or stay organized.  Daily checking in helps to keep them on track.  It also shows them that someone cares and is not going to give up, even when things don't go well.  Lastly, it unites home and school because their is daily communication.  Some educators would call this PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies), others BIP (Behavior Intervention Program),and yet others RtI (Response to Intervention).  But,whatever you want to call it, just know that it works.

Our school is really focused on RtI.  I have heard Jim Wright (one of the leading educators of RtI) present and have talked with him about how to help with Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions, and much of the check in and check out materials I use come from his Academic Survival Skills Checklist Focus Areas off his website www.interventioncentral.org

Here is the tweaked up version I am using for a Check In and Check Out Sheet when I see them everyday.  It takes no more than 5 minutes to complete, but it helps to hold them accountable, and keeps them from slipping into the abyss.

You can get a copy of this form on my Resource Page under RtI.

  21. Hi, Can you please send me a copy? Elizabeth.Morotti@gmail.com

Also, what do you do when a student does not get the parent signature? That is the problem that I have a lot with my middle school students.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Elizabeth,

I will send you a copy when I go back to work next week. As far as the parent signature, I have the student call home and tell their parent that they forgot to get their sheet signed. Typically our parents are very on board with this and they have a reward program set up at home. . .ie extra tv time, use of video game, less chores, or what ever is the motivator. No signature means no reward.

  24. Hi Carol,

I LOVE your ideas...right up my alley! Question: Do you find that the kids answer "Yes" to the questions everyday (when it might not be true)? Do you keep data on these kids, too, and are they different from your failing-two-classes-group? I'm trying desperately to be effective and keep up and want it to be meaningful. Any tips you could give would be VERY much appreciated. I can see that you are a very busy woman--so I hope you don't mind helping me! Thank you so much!

  30. I really could use help. Our son has some major executive functioning struggles especially at school. He has several teachers and no steady counselor to meet with because it is a charter school. A daily check in and check out with each class name so teachers can check off each day would work better for him. Do you have ideas of how I can do this for him/them? I don't want to wait around for the school any longer. I will pay you for you precious time. Thank you!!
